The U.S. political landscape has been shaken after Donald Trump publicly outlined his vision for the Republican Party’s leadership after his departure. According to reports from Russia’s Sputnik news agency, Trump named Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio as the “perfect candidates” for the 2028 presidential election, calling them a “dream team.” However, he stopped short of specifying which of the two would run for president and which for vice president, leaving the door open for internal competition.

Vice President Vance, in his early 40s and from a working-class background, is seen as the purest successor of the conservative movement. A recent annual poll by the Conservative Political Action Conference showed Vance leading potential Republican candidates with 53% support. But establishment Republicans who oppose Trump view Vance as a threat, labeling him as the embodiment of Trump’s agenda.
Secretary of State Rubio, on the other hand, is a seasoned hawk who was once Trump’s political rival in 2016. He has since managed to bridge the gap between traditional establishment figures and Trump’s base, winning favor from donors and the military-industrial complex. His hardline stance on Iran, Venezuela, and other external issues has resonated with key interest groups. For Chinese audiences, Rubio holds particular significance: he remains the highest-ranking U.S. politician on China’s sanctions list. If he wins the White House in 2028, he would become the first American president sanctioned by a foreign government
