The top-of-the-table clash between Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague was abandoned on Saturday after hundreds of home fans stormed the pitch in the dying moments of the match at the Fortuna Arena. The game was on the verge of deciding the league title, with Slavia leading 3-2 just seconds before full time.
According to reports, groups of Slavia supporters broke through security barriers during stoppage time before suddenly flooding the field. Some carried flares and ran toward the away fans’ section, triggering panic and disorder across the stadium.
Flammable objects were also thrown from the stands, while players from both teams hurriedly left the pitch for their safety amid a highly tense atmosphere. Police intervened urgently to restore order inside and outside the venue, later confirming they had launched criminal investigations into suspected hooliganism and violence linked to the match.
In related developments, authorities stated that Sparta Prague goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík was among those targeted during the incidents, sustaining an injury from a flare thrown his way. Surovčík later issued a statement on social media, saying that being confronted face-to-face and directly attacked during the game was completely unacceptable, and he vowed to take legal action.
The referee officially halted the match, while Czech media reported that Sparta players later left the field under heavy security and police escort, heading to the team bus to avoid further escalation.
Slavia Prague president Jaroslav Tvrdík backed the decision to end the match, confirming that the visiting club had reported one or two players being assaulted. He stressed that stopping the game was the right call under the circumstances, labeling the incident a “stain of shame” that has no place in sports.
