IOC Shelves Plan to Add Summer Events to Winter Olympics for 2030 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to abandon its plan to include certain summer sports in the Winter Olympics, which were under consideration for the 2030 Games in the French Alps. According to sources revealed on the 29th, IOC executives and officials briefed committee members, confirming the organization will uphold the Olympic Charter, which explicitly states that only sports conducted on snow or ice qualify as winter events.

The IOC had established a working group under President Thomas Bach’s successor, Coventry, to review Olympic disciplines. The summer-to-winter shift was intended to curb the expansion of the Summer Games, but winter sports federations opposed it, arguing that it would undermine the unique identity of the winter sports festival.

The 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics is set to feature a record 36 sports, including five additional disciplines like baseball and softball. Meanwhile, due to financial concerns, the 2032 Brisbane Games may see a significant reduction in events, with potential cuts to sports and disciplines even among those that remain.
