Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk took part in an air show experience with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, flying in an F-16 Fighting Falcon as a civilian passenger through the Air Force’s “Hometown Heroes” program.

“It was an incredible experience. The day was amazing even before the flight. It’s hard to believe how much preparation goes into just over an hour in the air. The only moment I felt a little uneasy was when the pilot let me take control of the plane. I started rolling barrel rolls one after another. It was one of the best moments of my life,” Tkachuk said.

“We talked a lot about the similarities between hockey and what they do. They have a true family atmosphere. They are very close and completely depend on each other. Everyone has to do their part perfectly, or it won’t work. They are inspiring. I really admire how tight-knit their team is.”

Before the flight, Tkachuk underwent several hours of preparation, including special breathing exercises to withstand extreme G-forces. During the flight, the crew experienced up to 9.5 G.

After landing, the hockey star gave the pilots a Florida Panthers jersey and allowed fans to take photos with his Olympic gold medal.

Tkachuk is a two-time Stanley Cup champion (2024 and 2025) and won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2026.
